After breakfast, check out of the Hotel for a private tour.

Each tent has either a queen size, or two twin beds made up with pillows, fresh linen, duvets and Arabic throws. The bedroom tents also feature bedside tables with lights, and luggage stands. There are also Arabic rugs on the floor. There is a zip doorway through to the bathroom tent which features a vanity stand complete with an electric pump shower and chemical toilet. Towels are also provided for all of our guests. Guests will be served a three course meal for dinner typically with a hot local main course or fresh fish for instance, depending on where the camp is setup, and a hot breakfast. All meals are freshly prepared by the camp staff.

Each camp is staffed by our support team who are there to assist you in having an enjoyable stay with us. Our trips are led by our experienced Omani Guides who speak a variety of languages. Trips are conducted in 4*4 vehicles with typically 2 guests in any one vehicle.

All meals are included. A hot breakfast and three course evening meal is normally prepared with either a freshly prepared picnic lunch served from your own hamper, lunch in a local restaurant or a hot meal provided in camp when you are staying there for more than one night. All water and soft drinks are provided, and ‘sun downers’ as well as drinks with all meals are included.

You head south out of Muscat along the coast to the fishing town of Quriyyat where you are able to stroll along its promenade and visit its historic fort. You continue along the coast, visiting the Bimah sinkhole, one of the wonders of Oman and the twin wadis of Tiwi and Shab. The afternoon is taken up exploring the wadis, clambering over big boulders and swimming in their deep pools. You arrive late afternoon to White Beach at Fins for the night.

DAY 05

Today you leave the coast and head to the Sharqiya Sands region, home to the Wahiba Sands desert and Wadi Bani Khalid. You visit the old domed mosque at Jalan Bani Bu Ali near the town of Al Kamil. Proceeding alongside the desert you head into the hills to Wadi Bani Khalid. This wadi is one of Oman’s finest and gives us a great opportunity to explore the depths of the wadi. You have an opportunity to just relax by the crystal waters or swim through the different pools and clamber over the boulders into the heart of the wadi itself. Mid-afternoon you head into the sands.

DAY 06

You head out of the desert and head north towards the Hajar mountain range. En route you visit the old settlement at Mizfa, near Ibra. You continue to the foot of the mountains where you are able to wander around the deserted village of Birkat Al Mawz. You head through Nizwa and onto the highest peak in Oman, Jebal Shams. The views are quite spectacular from the summit, some 3,000m above sea level. Enjoy your camp on top of the mountain.

After breakfast there is a chance to explore Nizwa, before heading back to Muscat.

Welcome to Delhi! We will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to the hotel.

Delhi

One of the most historic capitals in the world, Delhi is a treasure trove that reveals the ultimate combination of tradition and modernity. Made up of seven ancient cities, spanning the period from the 11th to 20th centuries, very few cities in the world can express such a profusion of architectural styles. Its multi-layered existence is tantalizing and can entice the curious traveller to embark on a fascinating journey of discovery.

DAY 02

Morning: Sightseeing tour of Old Delhi.

Visit the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in Asia, built by the distinguished Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. Proceed through the streets of old Delhi, to arrive at the Red Fort (closed on Monday) – a magical monument of red sandstone, built at the pinnacle of the Mogul empire. Also visit the Raj Ghat –the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi. Enjoy a bicycle ride through the bustling narrow lanes of Old Delhi.

Afternoon: Sightseeing tour of New Delhi.

Visit Humayun’s Tomb – the first great example of a new and distinctive style, which developed to become the hallmark of the Mughal Dynasty. Also visit the Qutab Minar (Tower of Victory) – a masterpiece built to establish the might of Islam and the onset of the Muslim rule in India, Drive past the imposing India Gate – a War Memorial Arch, the residence of the President – the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Parliament House and other government buildings.

DAY 03

Morning: Transfer to the Delhi railway station to board a train to Agra.

Agra

The city of Agra, the quintessence of the grand Mughal era, reigns to this day in the public mind as the embodiment of royal grace, imposing architecture and power. No tour to India can be complete without paying a visit to this erstwhile capital of the Mughals and the city of the Taj Mahal, the world’s most beloved monument.

Morning: Sightseeing tour of Agra.

Visit the world famous Taj Mahal (closed on Friday), referred to as one of the Wonders of the World. The Taj Mahal is the epitome of love, built in white marble by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The monument was commissioned in 1631 and took 20,000 artisans 22 years to complete. On to the Agra Fort, an outstanding example of Mughal architecture and the seat and stronghold of the Mughal Empire over successive generations. Shah Jahan, the Taj’s creator, spent the last years of his life imprisoned at the fort, by his son Aurangzeb. It was built in the late 1560`s by their predecessor, Akbar, with later embellishments by Jehangir, his son, and Shah Jahan, his grandson.

DAY 04

This morning, you will be driven to Ajabgarh, en-route visiting Fatehpur Sikri (approx 200 km / 04 hrs), Akbar’s abandoned capital. Located 40 kilometeres from Agra, it was built in honour of the Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti. It was the Mughal capital for 14 years before it was abandoned due to the lack of water. Made of red sandstone it combines influences from both Hindu and Mughal architecture. Continue on to the luxurious garden estate of Ajabgarh, Rajasthan.

Jaipur

Jaipur, known as the Pink City, is the capital state of Rajasthan. The “pink city” label applies specifically to the old walled quarter of the Rajasthani capital, while in the northeast of the town, glorious palaces and temples, spanning centuries in an assortment of styles, are scattered throughout an otherwise predominantly urban area. Camel drawn carts are characteristic of Jaipur’s passing street scene.

DAY 08

Morning: Excursion to Amber Fort.

Visit the ancient capital of Amer to see the fabulous Amber Fort (experience an Elephant / Jeep ride), situated on a ridge just outside Jaipur city. Crowning the crest of a hill, the Amber Fort offers a view of Maota Lake and the historic old town located at the base of the hill, which formed the early seat of the Amber Kings before the fort was made their capital. Several havelis, step wells and temples that can be seen below the fort, point to the existence of a self-sufficient township, where the Mughal Emperor Akbar, used to visit on his annual pilgrimage to Ajmer.

Check out of the hotel and proceed on a sightseeing tour of the city’s highlights. The City Palace is a synthesis of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, consisting of an overwhelming complex of exquisite palaces. Visit the City Palace Museum, which has a superb collection of Rajasthani costumes, and armory of Mughals and Rajputs including swords of different shapes and sizes with chiseled handles. Also visit Jantar Mantar Observatory, a stone astrological and astronomical wonder built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 18th century.

Jodhpur

Jodhpur is also called the “Blue City‟ located on the edge of the Thar desert, it was once the capital of former princely state of Marwar founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, and is now the second largest city of Rajasthan. The graceful palaces, forts and temples bring alive the historic grandeur, exquisite handicrafts, folk dances, music and the brightly attired people lend a romantic aura to the city.

DAY 10

Morning: Sightseeing tour of Jodhpur.

Visit the magnificent Meherangarh fort, one of Rajasthan’s finest forts, looks down protectively over the city, from the hilltop. Still run by the Maharaja of Jodhpur, this 5 kilometer long majestic fort on a 125 metre high hill, is one of the most impressive and formidable structures. Also visit Jaswant Thada, located a short distance from the fort, just off the fort road, is a white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The cenotaph built in 1899, was followed by the royal crematorium and three other cenotaphs that stand nearby.

Afternoon: Enjoy a jeep safari to tour the Bishnoi Tribal Villages.

The Bishnois are passionate environmentalists and their faith bids them to protect every living being, if necessary with their lives. Experience their warm hospitality as they greet you with a traditional ceremony; learn herbal remedies and see traditional crafts like spinning and carpet making.

Udaipur

The capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world and was established around 1567 AD. The chequered history of Mewar is showcased in the city of Udaipur, which is akin to an oasis in the desert state of Rajasthan. It is a rich and beguiling tapestry of lakeside palaces, forts, temples, havelis and gardens, reflecting the varied influences of the centuries. Also called ‘Venice of the East’, Udaipur is located in the Aravalli ranges of the royal state of Rajasthan. Surrounded by ancient mountains and set on the edge of three lakes, it is a beautiful old city with narrow lanes meandering through it.

DAY 12

Morning: Sightseeing of Udaipur.

Visit the City Palace and Sahelion-ki-Bari. City Palace is composed of 4 major and several minor palaces that form a single façade. Its main entrance is through a triple arched gate, the Tripolia, built in 1725. The gate leads to a series of courtyards, corridors and gardens. Also visit the Sahelion-ki-Bari, Garden of Maids of Honour that comprises of ornamental fountains, a lotus pool and rose garden. It was built specially for one of the queens of Udaipur, whose dowry included 48 maids!

DAY 13

Morning: Excursion to Ranakpur (approx. 98 km / 2 hours)

Visit the beautiful Jain temples of Ranakpur, some of the most exquisite temples in the country, famous for their intricate freizes and sculptures. The main Chaumukha (four faced) temple was built in 1439 and is dedicated to the first enlightened one, Adinatha Rishabdeva. An inscription in it traces its origin to the reign of Rana Kumbha. The main shrine of Adinatha, with its intricately carved 1444 columns, is the largest and the most complex Jain temple in the country.

DAY 03 (SUNDAY)

Arrive in Jaipur – the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur.

Nestled in the rugged Aravali hills; the picturesque capital city of Jaipur is the pristine jewel in the crown of the desert state of Rajasthan. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 AD; it is surrounded by high defensive walls, rugged hills and dotted by magnificent palaces, massive forts and exquisite temples.

On arrival begin your sightseeing tour of the City Palace Museum, Jaipur which houses a remarkable collection of rugs, photographs, textiles, carpets, royal costumes, miniature paintings from Rajput and Mughal era, and rare astronomical works in Arabic, Persian, Latin and Sanskrit.

Continue your sightseeing tour and visit the impressive collection of architectural astronomical instruments at Jantar Mantar (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – the largest stone astronomical observatory in the world.

Return to the train for lunch.

Following lunch explore the bazaars of Jaipur with an opportunity to shop for some of the finest jewellery, textiles and blue pottery for which the city is renowned.

Complete the exciting day in the evening with a unique and enthralling experience – an Exhibition Elephant Polo Match. Your arrival at the venue will be accompanied by the royal military band and the beating of ‘Nagadas’ (huge Indian drums). You may choose to watch or participate in an exhibition game. After the match, enjoy dinner over sparkling wine.

Following dinner, return to the station and board the train for a comfortable sleep on board Maharajas’ Express.

DAY 04 (MONDAY)

This morning, following breakfast on board, you will get the opportunity to visit the 11th century Amber Fort. Situated on a ridge just outside the city of Jaipur; this fort palace is surrounded by fortified battlements overlooking the Maota Lake. A short jeep ride takes you up to the fort where you will enjoy a tour of the royal apartments, with striking views of the gorge. Step back into the Mughal era as you enter the Chamber of Mirrors (Sheesh Mahal), and the Hall of Victory.

Continue your sightseeing tour with a visit to the “Anokhi Textile Museum” of hand-block printing; situated in the shadows of historic 11th century Amber Fort. The museum was established in year 2005 with a thoughtful initiative to preserve and conserve the art of traditional hand printed textiles from the celebrated towns of Sanganer and Bagru. It is probably the only museum of its kind in the world where one can observe the entire consuming and exhausting method of hand-block printing from carving of wooden blocks to transformation of raw fabric into a piece of art.

After sightseeing return to the Maharajas’ Express and enjoy a sumptuous lunch.

Following lunch you may choose to participate in one of the optional tours. Enjoy spa facilities at a palace hotel OR proceed on an excursion to Nahargarh Biological Park / Elephant Rehabilitation Centre – a delight for nature and wildlife lovers, the park is positioned just beyond the city limits of Jaipur and is spread over 7.2 square kilometres. The park was founded and introduced by Government of Rajasthan with an idea to conserve rare and endangered species of flora, fauna and wildlife of dry deciduous forest. Today the park is perfect example of tropical dry deciduous thorn forest and refuge for Asiatic lions, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, blue-bull, Indian gazelle, pangolin, langur monkey, jungle civet, desert fox, wild boar and variety of birds.

DAY 05 (TUESDAY)

Today you arrive in the south eastern region of Rajasthan into the historical city of Kota. Following breakfast onboard disembark and proceed for a boat cruise on river Chambal. River Chambal is home to wide range of flora, fauna, highly endangered Gangetic dolphins, smooth coated otters, jungle cats, jackal, fox, hyena, civets and Ghariyal (Thin snouted Indian Crocodile. It is a safe haven for more than 300 species of birds.

This boat journey is a captivating expedition through primeval land, thriving culture and prospering civilization on the banks of river Chambal.

After the cruise you return to the train to relish a sumptuous lunch.

Following lunch visit Maharao Madho Singh Museum. Garh Palace, the imposing 13th century fort of Kota is positioned on the bank of river Chambal. This impressive and one of the largest fort in state of Rajasthan flaunts six huge archways to enter the city, embankment with a parapet, bastions and watch towers. The fort has many places including Madho Singh Mahal, Raj Mahal, Bada Mahal and Chhatar Mahal.

Be welcomed like the Royals were, and enjoy the hospitality that Rajasthan has been famous for since time immemorial. The highlight of this day is a Royal Dinner at the ‘Durbar Mahal’– lavishly decorated with the historical belongings of the Royal Family, at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, and savour mouth watering delicacies with cocktails. Maharaja Umed Singh II commissioned Sir Swinton Jacob, an officer of the Royal Engineers in the British Army to undertake the conception and implementation of the Umed Bhawan Palace and in 1905 this palace was constructed. The Umaid Bhawan Palace subtly blends Rajput and Victorian architecture.

DAY 06 (WEDNESDAY)

Enjoy a relaxed morning onboard the train, following a leisurely breakfast or take up the optional excursion to the famous cotton-silk weavers’ colonies at Kaithoon. Kaithoon is known for hand weaving of cotton and silk fabric / saris complemented by real gold or silver wire using the pit-looms popularly known as Kota Doria. Silk provides the necessary transparency and cotton bestows strength to the fabric.

Enjoy lunch onboard as you ride through the countryside of Rajasthan, to the town of Sawai Madhopur.

On arrival in Sawai Madhopur, get ready for an exciting safari to the ‘Ranthambore National Park’. The park encompasses nearly 400 square kilometres of dry, deciduous forest. The park derives its name from the huge 1000 year old Rajput fortress of Ranthambore which sits 215 meters high in the forest. Originally the private hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur, Ranthambore was declared a National Park in 1973. The Park is famous for its open sightings of tigers, sambar, chital, nilgai, chinkara, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, jackal and leopard. It is also a bird watcher’s paradise. Wildlife cannot be compared to Africa, and you are indeed fortunate if you spot the elusive tiger or the shy leopard.

After the drive return to the comforts of the Maharajas’ Express and relish dinner.

DAY 07 (THURSDAY)

This morning prepare yourself for an early morning game drive into Ranthambore National Park with yet another opportunity to sight the king of the jungle, Tiger. Following the rustic game drive, return to the luxuries of the Maharajas’ Express.

Enjoy breakfast on board as you make your way to the beautiful city Agra – the Jewel of India. Lunch will be served on board.

Agra is home to one of the world’s great architectural wonders – the Taj Mahal. With its spectacular monumental masterpieces and picturesque natural setting, Agra is a legendary city etched in the history of time.

On arrival, disembark and visit the world famous Taj Mahal, built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the mausoleum for his favourite queen Mumtaz Mahal. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this incomparable marvel is constructed entirely out of white marble and is an architectural masterpiece with beautiful inlay work and marble screens. Approximately 20,000 of India’s most revered craftsmen were recruited to shape this poetry in marble. Witness the dramatic interplay of light as the sun sets & casts its scarlet rays over the pearl white tomb, recreating the magic of Taj!

DAY 08 (FRIDAY)

Early this morning disembark and proceed to Taj Khema, a tableland overlooking the magnificent Taj and enjoy a Champagne breakfast.

Return to the train and have a relaxed morning your disposal OR choose to participate in any of the following optional activities.

Proceed for excursion to Fatehpur Sikri, on a tour of the fascinating sights comprising of imposing gateways, Halls of Private and Public audience, beautifully sculptured palaces with unique water bodies, reflecting a perfect blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. This deserted red sandstone city was built by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar as his capital in the late 16th century. It is now a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You may visit Itmad-ud-Daulah, the 17th century mausoleum built by Empress Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jehangir, in memory of her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Often referred and regarded as ‘Baby Taj’, the mausoleum is set in a “Char Bagh” (four gardens) style divided equally by water channels and walkways. Its white marble walls are inlaid with semi-precious stones, giving them shape of flower bouquets, trees, wine and perfume bottles.

Early this morning the train pulls into New Delhi. Following breakfast on board you will disembark at Safdarjung Station at around 0830 hours.

Bid farewell to the Maharajas’ Express as your ‘Royal Sojourn’ journey comes to an end. The royal journey is over, but the memory of which, will live on forever!

Also visit the awe inspiring Jantar Mantar Observatory, a stone astrological and astronomical wonder built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 18th century. Welcome aboard the Maharajas’ Express.

The epic journey begins at the Delhi Safdarjung Railway station, where on arrival at 0830 hours approximately, complete your registration and check in formalities as you enjoy a welcome drink.

The Maharajas’ Express departs Delhi at around 1000 hours to Agra.

Enjoy a leisurely brunch on board as you journey through the picturesque countryside, arriving into the ‘City of Mughal Splendour’ Agra. On arrival disembark and explore the spectacular monuments of the city.

Agra, the jewel of India, is home to one of the world’s greatest architectural wonders – the Taj Mahal. With its spectacular monumental masterpieces and picturesque natural setting, Agra is a legendary city glorified by time.

Proceed to visit the magnificent Agra Fort, an outstanding example of Mughal architecture and the seat and stronghold of the Mughal Empire under successive generations. Shah Jahan, the Taj’s creator, spent the last years of his life imprisoned at the fort by his son Aurangzeb.

The highlight of this afternoon is a high tea atop the Taj Khema. Enjoy a glass of champagne in the backdrop of the splendid Taj Mahal at sunset.

Return to the train or you may, if you wish, enjoy some free time shopping for pietra dura marble and fine Mughal Jewellery keeping the traditional Mughal arts alive OR as an optional activity you may avail of spa facilities at a hotel.

DAY 03 (MONDAY)

Early this morning, disembark to visit the world famous Taj Mahal, built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the mausoleum for his favourite queen Mumtaz Mahal.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this incomparable marvel is constructed entirely out of white marble and is an architectural masterpiece with beautiful inlay work and marble screens. Approximately 20,000 of India’s most revered craftsmen were recruited to give shape to this poetry in marble. Witness the dramatic interplay of light as the sun rises and casts its golden rays over the pearl white tomb, recreating the magic of the Taj!

Return to the train and enjoy a leisurely breakfast as you journey through the fascinating Chambal Ravines, which served as the home to some of India’s most notorious dacoits. Admire the dramatic landscape of deep and narrow gorges, undulating sandy hills interspersed with rich fields.

Arrive into the royal city of Gwalior, a city where many reigning dynasties have left indelible etchings of their rule on all its palaces, temples and monuments. These mementos of a glorious past have been preserved, giving Gwalior a timeless appeal.

Following disembarkation, continue for lunch to the Usha Kiran Palace. On arrival, experience a Royal traditional welcome. Enter this 120 year old palace, which has hosted a King of England, set amidst 9 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, artistic stone carvings and delicate filigree work.

After lunch, proceed on a tour of the magnificent Gwalior Fort, admiring its enclosed exquisite temples and palaces, the most spectacular being the Man Mandir Palace. This palace is a masterpiece of Rajput architecture, embellished with exquisite stone carving and latticework. Some of the other fascinating sights within the 3 kilometer fort enclosure are the 21 colossal Jain sculptures depicting the ‘tirthankaras’ (one who has achieved freedom from the cycle of rebirth) carved into the rock face and the famous Saas-Bahu (Mother and Daughter-in-law) temples covered with beautiful sculptures of dancing girls and deities. Your visit continues to the opulent Jai Vilas Palace Museum, a section of which still remains the residence of the royal family of Gwalior. Enjoy exploring the unique exhibits in the museum, the most exquisite being the unique model train made of crystal to serve drinks and aperitifs during the Royal banquets in the Durbar Hall. Admire the stupendous Durbar Hall with its crystal staircase, arched ceiling with stunning gold leaf work supporting two of the world’s largest chandeliers. One of the many legends is that in order to test the strength of the ceiling to support the chandeliers, several elephants were made to stand on the ceiling!

Following lunch, you have the option to enjoy spa facilities at the hotel.

A grand finale to the exciting day is the Royal spread of the finest delicacies of the Royal kitchens served in the grand compound of the Palace.

DAY 04 (TUESDAY)

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast on board the train as she continues her journey through some of the most dramatic and picturesque environs towards Khajuraho. Enroute you will enjoy a stop at the bejewelled town of Orchha.

On arrival in Orchha, disembark and venture on tour of the quaint domain of the Bundela Kings. Visit the Jahangiri Mahal which is an excellent example of the Rajput Bundela architecture. Marvel the multi layered palace with its 132 chambers. A striking feature of the palace is the sandstone walls embellished with lapis lazuli tiles and ornate jali screens. Catch a glimpse of some rituals being performed as you pass the beautiful temple of Chaturbhuj which is a unique blend of fort and temple architecture. Not to be missed are the beautiful chhatris better known as cenotaphs of the Orchha rulers lying along the Betwa River.

Return to the train and continue onwards to the temple city of Khajuraho. Admire the rich landscape as you have lunch on board.

Khajuraho is renowned for its architecture and exquisite sculptures. Built between 950 and 1050 AD in a truly inspired burst of creativity, the temples are superb examples of Indo-Aryan architecture. The highly sensual engravings depict the whole range of human emotions and relationships.

On arrival proceed on a tour of the magnificent temples of Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Western group which constitutes some of the finest examples of Chandela art at its peak. Visit the Kandariya Mahadev Temple and the Chaunsath Yogini Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the 64 Yoginis respectively. Continue to the Eastern group of temples. Visit the exquisite Jain Temples and admire some of the finest sculptures and carvings.

Experience the fascinating Son-et-Lumière spectacle, which evokes the life and times of the great Chandela Kings and traces the story of the unique temples from the 10th century to the present day. Return to the comfort of the train and continue your journey to the Bandhavgarh National Park.

DAY 05 (WEDNESDAY)

This morning, as you enjoy breakfast the train rolls into Umaria. Disembark and prepare yourself for an exciting drive to the Bandhavgarh National Park. With the highest known density of tigers, it was the former hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Rewa. Animals such as deer, langurs, sloth bears and exotic birds can also be found here.

On arrival at the Bandhavgarh National Park enjoy a village tour where you will also have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Forests for Tigers’ program – this involves reforestation of Tiger habitat, an insight into the various projects, and interaction with a wildlife artist. Enjoy lunch at a wildlife resort in the company of a forest conservationist.

Later continue on a jeep safari into the park exploring the flora and fauna. The grasslands and sal forests are home to a rich variety of wildlife including the tiger. Wildlife in India cannot be compared to Africa and you are indeed fortunate if you spot the elusive tiger.

Later you will return to Umaria and board the train.

DAY 06 (THURSDAY)

Today as you enjoy breakfast, your journey continues from the royal jungles through rich agricultural fields, arriving into the holy city of Varanasi.

One of the oldest living cities in the world, Varanasi (also known as Kashi or Benaras) has a spiritual legacy of over 3000 years. A place of pilgrimage, this holy city is set on the banks of the sacred river Ganges. Varanasi epitomizes the chaos and colour of India. Lively bazaars, exquisite and bright silks, festivals, temples, mosques and palaces – all can be found here.

Following disembarkation, your tour begins with the visit to ancient ruins of Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon expounding the principles of Buddhism. Visit the ruins, stupa and the Ashoka Pillar, whose four back-to-back lions have been adopted as India’s national emblem.

After a sumptuous lunch, visit the world famous Varanasi Silk Weaving Centre. You can even shop for some world famous Banarasi silk saris and brocades.

Proceed for a scenic cruise on the river Ganges and witness a magical evening aarti at the ghats of the holy Ganges. The chants of Sanskrit mantras, the clash of cymbals and drums, the scent of flowers, incense and sandalwood and the blazing camphor lamp and many flamed aarti raised high in the air, makes for an absolute magical evening to remember!

DAY 07 (FRIDAY)

Enjoy traversing through the lush green agricultural belt of Uttar Pradesh, as you relish your breakfast on board. Late morning, the Maharajas’ Express slowly pulls into the fabled ‘City of Nawabs’, Lucknow.

This morning you will explore the dramatic ruins of Imperialistic Lucknow as you visit The Residency, started by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulla and completed by Nawab Sadat Ali for the British resident in 1800. Unravel the history of the Mutiny of 1857 at the Residency as you explore her ruins and visit the main Residency building which houses an interesting Museum displaying the original model of the Residency, old lithographs, photographs, paintings, documents and period-objects.

Experience the imperialistic splendour and mystical elegance of the Nawabs of Awadh as you visit their architectural wonders like the famous ‘Rumi Darwaza’, a beautifully ornamented gateway; the spectacular Bada Imambara considered being the largest vaulted apartment in the world comprising of ornamental gateways, corridors and galleries.

Following lunch on board, the afternoon will be at leisure for you to relax.

This evening you will be transported into the glorious era of the Nawabs of Awadh as you experience the traditional hospitality typical to the Royal Houses, celebrating an ‘Indian Evening’. The mesmerising music, exquisite courtesan dance and the Royal Culinary Delights from the Nawabi kitchens – all combine to bring alive the elegance and charm of the Nawabi era.

Then return to the train and continue on your onward journey.

DAY 08 (SATURDAY)

Early this morning the train pulls into New Delhi. Following breakfast on board you will disembark at Safdarjung Station at around 0830 hours.

Bid farewell to the Maharajas’ Express as your ‘Classical India’ journey comes to an end. The royal journey is over, but the memory of which, will live on forever!

You will visit Qutab Minar, the tallest stone tower in India built to establish the might of Islam and onset of Muslim rule in India and Humayun’s tomb, the first great example of a new distinctive style, which developed to become the hallmark of the Mughal Dynasty. The tour also includes a drive past the imposing India Gate (War Memorial Arch), the Parliament building and the Rashtrapati Bhawan (the President’s residence).

Head off North along the Batinah coast. Visit the Seeb Fish Souq. Drive through the date palms to the sparkling springs and Fort at Nakhl. Visit the beautiful Wakan Village, famous for its fruit terrace farming. On to Wadi Abhyad, which has large patches of white sedimentation and when translated means white wadi. The drive winds through the mountains with small pools of water dotting the wadi bed.

From Al Sawadi Beach Resort or Al Nahda, head north towards Al Awabi. Turn towards Wadi Bani Auf. This stretch of graded road has steep bends and bumpy roads. Visit the charming mountain village of Bilad Sayt, where one is awestruck by the beauty of the landscape. This 70 kilometre stretch of road continues to the village of Al Hamra, famous for its date plantations. Visit the ruined village at Tanuf, before checking into the hotel.

Visit the Round Tower Fort, built in the 17th century, and souq, known for the Friday animal auction, intricately hand-carved “Khanjars” (daggers) and ornamental silver jewellery. Proceed to visit Jabrin, the finest of Oman’s Castles built in the late 17th century. The Castle displays the highest achievement in Omani ceiling painting and beautifully executed woodcarvings. Stop off at Bahla Fort. On to Misfah, a pretty mountain village with stone dwellings still in existence. While heading for Jebel Shams stop at the terrace farming village of Wadi Ghul. Drive to Wadi Nakher. In the Jebel Akhdar range Jebel Shams is the highest peak, offering spectacular views.

Proceed in an easterly direction for Sur, via Izki, Sinaw souk and Mudhaybi.

On to the Wahiba Sands, a vast mass of copper coloured undulating sand dunes rising up to 200 metres.

Head for Sur, visit the fish jetty and dhow factory, on to Sanseela Fort. The ruins of Bibi Miriam’s Tomb can be seen at the village of Qalhat on the coastal road to Muscat. Stop at Fins beach for a swim. On to Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with blue green water. At Dibab, take the off-road track to Wadi Arbayeen, characterized by date palms and deep pools of water. Proceed to Mazara before returning to Muscat.

Nestling at the foot of Aravalli hills, the Ranthambore National park is an outstanding example of the implementation of Project Tiger. The forests around Ranthambore were once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Today, the park is one of the most popular, with tiger sightings at its best – a photographers’ dream come true, dotted with numerous lakes and ponds. Ranthambore, hailed as one of India’s finest wildlife locations, is also categorized as a heritage site because of the picturesque ruins of the fort within the park.

Several havelis, stepwells and temples that can be seen below the fort, point to the existence of a self-sufficient township, where the Mughal emperor Akbar used to stop on his annual pilgrimage to Ajmer. The countryside offers a rugged terrain, trekking is by far the best way to enjoy Oman’s spectacular mountain landscape with a specialist guide.

Set off for the Round Tower Fort in Nizwa, built in the 17th century, and Souq renown for its Friday animal auction, intricately hand-carved “Khanjars” (daggers) and ornamental silver jewellery. Proceed in an easterly direction for Sur, via Izki, Sinaw souk and Mudhaybi, arriving at the Wahiba Sands, a vast mass of undulating copper coloured sand dunes rising up to 200 meters. Set off for a sunset camel safari around the resort (Light refreshments included).

Proceed to Ibra market, where local people shop, on to Wadi Naam. Start the ascent on an off-road track that winds through the mountains providing some very spectacular sights. Picnic on the way to the Beehive tombs, said to be more than 4000 years old! On to the Salmah plateau, the location of the Majlis Al Jinn, the second largest cave chamber in the world. The caves are only accessible to experienced rock climbers. Start the steep descent towards the coast, on a road full of hairpin bends. Stop off for a swim at Wadi Arbayeen, on the way back to Muscat.
